On Tuesday 21 March 2023 at 7.30pm, Mark Fennell did a demo on painting portraits in oils, using palette knives and brushes. Mark is a professional portrait painter who works to commission from his home studio in the hill-top village of Brill in Buckinghamshire. Unfortunately, the palette knife was used only in last 30 minutes of the demo. Mark explained it usually takes him three days to complete a portrait. The one he did is shown below.
The three completed portraits he brought with him, as shown below, were full of character.
He works predominantly in oils and notable sitters include Isla St Clair, Anthony Worrall Thompson and singer-songwriter John Otway. Mark’s work has been selected for exhibition with The Royal Society of Portrait Painters and The Royal Society of British Artists at The Mall Galleries in London. Mark was elected member of The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 2007 and is also a member of Buckinghamshire Art Society.
