Hopefully you’ve managed to get tickets to The Corn Exchange panto in Wallingford, which this year is Dick Whittington. It runs from 17th January to 1 February – evenings and matinees. Mark Wood designed the set this year and was lead painter, helped by Nicola Webb and his daughter.
The set comprises 6 cloths – each around 21 feet wide by 25 feet high, which require working on a high ladder or a scaffolding tower! Also, there are 6 side panels (known as flats) – each 4 feet wide by 12 feet high. Plus numerous painted items like a ship’s deck, grocery store, table, rope and posts, palm trees – you name it! That’s a lot of paint and around 4 weeks’ work in total.
Here’s a few photos – the pair at work, the flats on set and a close-up of one flat.
